“There are mothers out there who film their children setting up the Christmas tree and I admire them. Because there is no way my child is touching my Christmas tree.â€
It’s the age-old question that has divided holiday parents for decades.
Do you let your kids decorate the Christmas tree? Or are you the one and only master jewelry setter?
Two types of Christmas mothers
There are two kinds of moms in the small but intense corner of the Internet that belongs to Christmas moms.
Those who film their children decorating the tree with paper and clay creations from the nursery, and baubles hanging from low branches, where they hang on for dear life.
There are trinkets in piles, tangled lights and a crooked star. It’s a mess, but… memories.
Then there are Pinterest moms. With magazine-worthy trees: no gaps and perfectly styled arches and bells.
Who stays in the dark to decorate and would rather put a playground around the tree than have ginger-covered fingers touching perfectly rested artificial leaves.
And the child’s craft? It is hidden in a second tree in the arcade.
Because Instagram photos are more important than magic for kids. right?
“I’ve set it up exactly the way I want it.”
Former reality TV star and host Tayla Broad falls into the latter camp.
The Christmas fanatic is a year into parenthood, but she knows exactly where her daughter stands in the decorating department — and that’s pretty much it.
In a TikTok video that has mothers across the country nodding in agreement, she makes her stance clear: “There is no way my child is touching my Christmas tree.”
While the Melbourne mum “adores” families decorating together, there was only one option for her – to put up the tree while the baby sleeps.
“There are moms out there (who) film their kids setting up the Christmas tree and I really admire them,” she says.
“Because there’s no way my baby is going to touch my Christmas tree. She’s asleep and I’ve set it up the way I want it.
“She won’t help until she’s of an age where she knows the setting” until then, no. Don’t touch my Christmas tree.â€
She added in the caption that she is thinking of making her daughter her own tree.
“Everybody has second trees, guys”
You might think that this is a minority view, but a scroll of comments and social media – shows that this is a movement.
While the Magic of Christmas is all about the kids, styling and decorating is for the moms.
TikTok videos show moms “toddle-insulate” their Christmas trees, with giant fake presents and clear elastics tied to each hanging decoration. While others put smaller trees just for children.
In 24 hours Tayla’s video has had 390 thousand views, and almost 800 comments.
One mother admitted that her daughter only passes the decorations to her and never touches a branch.
Most mothers act as if their children have creative control, but as soon as they close their eyes, they “fix” the style of the tree.
“I let my kids do this, film it, and then change everything so it’s exactly how I want it when they’re asleep,” wrote one mom.
Other moms are fans of kids decorating the back of the tree. “Not me who turns the tree so their decorations don’t face anything but the wall,” suggests one smart mom.
Some users blame our holiday heroes for the “strict no touching rule”.
“Our elf puts up our tree for this very reason,” remarked one clever mother. While a second parent tells her children that Santa does not want the tree touched.
Another serious stylist doesn’t even let her partner near the sweet center, “my 30-year-old fiance still isn’t old enough to put up the tree,” and Tayla responded, “I feel it.”
Many people write about getting extra trees for children. “I got my boys a $5 tree from Kmart, they were so happy to decorate it however they wanted,” and I got the bonus of making our own big tree.â€
However, some mothers felt that this behavior was not in the spirit of Christmas.
“Imagine caring more about the look of a Christmas tree than making magic and memories with your little girl,” said one mother.
Another said: “My mum is like you, she’s a joy stealer.” Now my kids put up the tree however they want because Christmas is about making memories.
While I love the enthusiasm on both sides (I wouldn’t go so far as to stop the kids from touching a tree) I lean more toward giving mom, the undisputed hero of Christmas, something that’s hers.
Blame it on Santa or the Elf, take out the second and third trees, but let Mom have her own shiny tree to look at while she quietly loses her mind making everyone else’s Christmas perfect.
